Don’t you wish everyone did?” The Ambivalent Chief ExecutiveWe often complain about the challenge of having board members who don’t know their duties or don’t set aside enough time to provide support or undergo training.
But there’s another challenge on nonprofit boards doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It’s executive directors who prefer to keep their boards weak and underperforming because it enhances their own control over their organizations.
Three Key QuestionsI was Africa last week facilitating a workshop with the executive directors and chairs of about 10 organizations. On the morning of the second day, we turned to the three key questions I believe are the essential questions for a board to ask: · How do we know if we are fulfilling our mission?
· Are we talking about what’s really important?
· How do we make sure our organization is sustainable and resources are directed towards fulfilling the mission?
